Last year on November 28, 2025, Ranveer Singh attended the International Film Festival of India (IFFI), Goa, and courted controversy when he mimicked Daiva from Kantara Chapter 1: A Legend in the presence of actor and filmmaker Rishab Shetty. Moreover, he referred to the Chavundi Daiva as “female ghost”.
Videos from the event quickly went viral on social media and a major controversy erupted more so because Ranveer Singh’s Dhurandhar was up for a release.
A couple of days later, Ranveer Singh took to Instagram and shared an apology letter stating, “If I've hurt anyone's sentiments, I sincerely apologise.”

Now, almost two months after the controversy, an FIR has been filed against the actor for “hurting religious sentiments”.
A Bengaluru-based Advocate Prashanth Methal filed a private complaint to the 1st Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate (ACJM) Court and alleged that his religious sentiments were hurt over Ranveer Singh’s distasteful mimicry and mockery of Daiva.
Post this, the complaint was directed to the High Grounds police and subsequently an FIR was registered against the actor on Wednesday, January 28, 2026, under Sections 196, 299 and 302 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
As per the complaint, Ranveer Singh mocked Daiva publicly and “crudely imitated the divine expressions of Panjurli/Guliga Daiva”.
The complaint further alleged that Ranveer Singh “mocked the sacred Daiva tradition” and went on to call Chavundi Daiva as a “female ghost”.
While Ranveer called his action unintentional later in the apology note, the complainant has claimed that the actor was aware that what he was doing at an international event will hurt the religious sentiments of the devotees around the world.
What Ranveer Singh Said In His ApologyA couple of days after the incident, Ranveer Singh took to his Instagram account and shared a statement that read, “My intention was to highlight Rishab's incredible performance in the film. Actor to actor, I know how much it would take to perform that particular scene in the way that he did, for which he has my utmost admiration. I have always deeply respected every culture, tradition and belief in our country. If I've hurt anyone's sentiments, I sincerely apologise.”

The apology had come a couple of days before the theatrical release of Dhurandhar which went on to become the biggest grosser of Indian cinema beating almost all the records held by Shah Rukh Khan’s Jawan and Allu Arjun’s Pushpa 2: The Rule.
Interestingly, the controversy had erupted a few days before the theatrical release of the movie, the FIR has come a couple of days before its OTT release.
The Aditya Dhar directorial Dhurandhar co-starring Akshaye Khanna, Arjun Rampal and Sanjay Dutt is reportedly slated for January 30, 2026, release on Netflix.
