T20 World Cup 2026: Washington Sundar's Fate Likely to Be Decided on February 4

The suspense over Washington Sundar’s participation in the T20 World Cup 2026 is nearing its end. According to reports, a final call on his availability could be taken just 72 hours before Team India’s opening match.

India begin their World Cup campaign against USA on February 7, and Sundar’s fitness test is expected on February 4 at the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence.

Why Is February 4 So Crucial?

As per a report by The Times of India:

  • Washington Sundar will undergo a full fitness assessment on February 4

  • The test will determine whether he can handle match intensity and bowling workload

  • If declared fully fit, he will remain in India’s World Cup squad

  • If not, the team management may activate a backup option

Sundar picked up an injury during the first ODI against New Zealand on January 11 and has been sidelined since.

Squad Deadline vs Injury Rule
  • January 30 is the official deadline to make changes to the T20 World Cup squad

  • However, injury replacements are allowed even after the deadline, provided they get approval from the tournament’s technical committee

Because of this rule, selectors are waiting for medical clearance instead of rushing a replacement.

What’s the Current Situation?
  • Sundar batted on January 28

  • He did not participate in full drills on January 29

  • Team India will assemble in Mumbai on February 3

  • A warm-up match against South Africa is scheduled on February 4 — the same day as Sundar’s fitness test

The team wants clarity before the tournament begins, especially because Sundar plays a key all-rounder role.

Who Replaces Sundar If He Fails the Test?

If Washington Sundar is ruled out:

  • Riyan Parag is reportedly the front-runner to be added to the squad

  • His recent performances and flexibility as a batting all-rounder work in his favor
