The Supreme Court on Thursday, while hearing the petitions challenging the new rules of the UGC, has issued a notice to the Central Government and the UGC. A bench of Chief Justice Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi put a stay on these regulations and ordered that the next hearing of the case will be on March 19. The court has also given a clear order that till the next date of hearing, only the old UGC regulations of 2012 will remain in effect. Senior advocate Vishnu Shankar Jain, appearing for the petitioners, argued that Section 3C of the new rules is unconstitutional as the definition of discrimination given in it is not in accordance with the Constitution.
