Health problems are increasing rapidly all over the world and one of these problems is obesity. Although it seems to be a common disease, many people around the world are suffering from it. According to the latest statistics, around 31 percent of adults worldwide, or approximately 1.8 billion people, do not get enough physical activity. This statistic is not just a number but a sign of the rising number of heart diseases, diabetes and cancer in the coming years. Increasing weight spoils the health of our body. The effect of increased weight can be seen in our physical movements.

Physical inactivity has increased by about 5 percent between 2010 and 2022, and if the pace continues, the number could reach 35 percent by 2030, a concern. According to the World Health Organization, adults should get at least 150 minutes of moderate or 75 minutes of vigorous physical activity per week. Excess weight affects different parts of the body, multiplying the risk of diseases such as heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, dementia, and breast and colon cancer.
It has come to light that this situation is increasing significantly in India as well. Obesity has been increasing rapidly in the country in the last two decades and it has not been discussed as seriously as it should be. According to the National Family Health Survey-5, nearly one in four adults in India is obese. Hence weight gain and diseases are becoming a silent killer for India. In some places the prevalence of obesity is as low as 8 percent, while in others it has reached 50 percent. Both men and women suffer from this condition in cities as well as villages. According to a study by the Indian Council of Medical Research, millions of people in the country are suffering from problems like abdominal obesity, general obesity and high cholesterol. The number of overweight and obese people in India has doubled in the last 15 years and tripled in the last 30 years. Most alarmingly, more than 1.44 crore children in India are obese, which is predicted to increase health problems in the future.
According to doctors, obesity is not just a problem of weight gain. It increases the risk of diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, sleep apnea and many types of cancer. Accumulation of fat especially around the abdomen is considered to be the most dangerous. Our changing lifestyle and eating habits are the major reasons behind this growing problem. Urbanization, sedentary work, less physical activity, and increased consumption of processed and fast foods continue to increase obesity rates. According to WHO, almost half of India’s population does not exercise enough. The situation has been exacerbated by the Covid-19 pandemic, as people have reduced physical activity and increased screen time.
