With the beginning of Chhath festival, an atmosphere of reverence and faith is visible in the entire country. This festival is dedicated to the worship of Sun God and Chhathi Devi. It is believed that Chhathi Devi is the goddess who protects children and with her blessings there is happiness and prosperity in the family. Chhath festival is not just a religious ritual but also a symbol of gratitude towards nature, energy and motherhood. This festival is celebrated every year on the Shashti Tithi of Shukla Paksha of Kartik month. In the year 2025, this festival will start from 25th October.
According to the scriptures, the sixth goddess is mentioned in the Rigveda as ‘Usha’ Devi, who is considered the goddess of morning and the source of life energy. At the same time, in the Puranas, she has been described as the sister of Sun God, who fulfills the wishes of her devotees. On this festival, devotees observe a strict fast for four days and offer prayers to the rising and setting sun and pray to Goddess Chhathi for the well-being of the family.

According to other stories, Chhath Maiya is considered as the mental daughter of Lord Brahma and sister of Lord Surya. Shashthi Devi i.e. Chhath Maiya is considered the goddess of procreation. It is believed that while creating the universe, Lord Brahma had divided himself into two parts, one part in the form of man and the other part in the form of nature. Nature had also divided itself into 6 parts. One of these was the mother goddess or Devasena. Whereas Chhath Maiya is considered to be the sixth part of Devasena, hence she is also called the sixth goddess.
