Telangana Village: An alleged case of large-scale animal cruelty has come to light in Thummaipally village of Nagarkurnool district, Telangana, where nearly 100 stray dogs are reported to have been killed over a short period. The incident has caused widespread concern among animal welfare groups and local residents, prompting a formal police complaint and calls for strict legal action.

Complaint Filed After Disturbing Reports
The matter came to official attention after a complaint was submitted at the Charapaka Police Station by Mudavath Preethi, an Animal Cruelty Prevention Assistant associated with the Stray Animal Foundation of India, a non-governmental organisation. According to police records, the complaint was received on January 27, following information about repeated killings of stray dogs in the village.
Preethi, who resides in Nagarkurnool, stated that she received alerts from local sources regarding the deaths of a large number of dogs over the past ten days. Based on the information gathered, she approached the authorities seeking immediate intervention and accountability.
Allegations Against Local Village Authorities
In her written petition, the complainant alleged that the killings were carried out by administering poisonous injections to the animals. The responsibility for the act has reportedly been attributed to the village Sarpanch and the Panchayat Secretary of Thummaipally, who operate under the local governance system.
The complaint claims that the alleged actions were not isolated incidents but occurred systematically over several days. The scale of the deaths has raised serious questions about the role of village-level authorities and the misuse of administrative power.
Audio Conversations Cited in FIR
As part of the complaint, references were made to recorded conversations involving animal welfare activist Adukapuram Goutham and the village Sarpanch. In the cited discussion, the Sarpanch allegedly acknowledged that injections were used to kill the dogs and that external individuals were hired for the task at a cost of ₹18,000.
Another recorded exchange reportedly took place between Goutham and a person identified as Gopi, who was allegedly involved in carrying out the killings. In that conversation, Gopi is said to have confirmed that the dogs were poisoned over a span of approximately ten days.
Disposal of Carcasses Raises Further Concerns
Further details mentioned in the complaint suggest that the bodies of the dogs were removed from the village after the killings. A Gram Panchayat worker, identified as Ravi, is accused of handling the removal of the carcasses. The Sarpanch allegedly stated that the remains were disposed of at a location nearly two kilometres away from the village.
Animal welfare advocates argue that such actions, if proven, indicate an attempt to conceal evidence and avoid public scrutiny. These claims have intensified demands for a thorough investigation and forensic examination.
Activists Demand Strict Legal Action
Animal rights activists have strongly condemned the incident, describing it as a serious violation of animal protection laws. Adukapuram Goutham, who has been actively involved in bringing the matter to light, has called for stringent punishment for all individuals found responsible.
Activists have also urged authorities to enforce existing animal welfare regulations more effectively, stressing that acts of cruelty against stray animals continue to occur due to weak implementation and lack of accountability at the local level.
Police Investigation Underway
Based on the complaint, police have initiated preliminary inquiries to verify the allegations and examine the evidence provided, including audio recordings. Officials have stated that appropriate legal steps will be taken in accordance with the findings of the investigation.
The case has drawn attention to broader concerns surrounding the treatment of stray animals and the responsibilities of local governing bodies. Animal welfare groups hope the outcome will set a precedent for stricter enforcement and deterrence against similar acts in the future.
