Political: Several people were injured late Thursday night as tensions flared between Youth Congress workers and activists linked to the Students’ Federation of India and the Democratic Youth Federation of India in Kerala’s Kannur district. The confrontation unfolded amid a protest triggered by allegations of vandalism involving political posters, quickly escalating into physical clashes that required police intervention.

Background to the Planned Protest
The incident followed preparations by the Youth Congress to hold a satyagraha in Payyanur. The demonstration was announced after P. Unnikrishnan, a former area secretary and district committee member, publicly alleged irregularities related to the martyrs’ fund. According to Youth Congress leaders, the protest was intended to draw attention to these claims and seek accountability within the party framework.
Posters publicising the satyagraha were put up across parts of Payyanur earlier in the day, setting the stage for heightened political activity in the area. Supporters described the campaign as peaceful in intent, aimed at voicing internal concerns rather than provoking confrontation.
Allegations Over Poster Vandalism
Tensions reportedly began when members associated with DYFI and SFI allegedly removed or damaged posters linked to the proposed satyagraha. Youth Congress workers claimed the act was deliberate and meant to suppress dissent, while the opposing groups disputed these accusations. The disagreement over the posters soon drew more activists to the area, increasing the risk of confrontation as night fell.
Eyewitnesses said heated arguments broke out at multiple points, with rival slogans and verbal exchanges adding to the charged atmosphere. What began as a dispute over campaign material quickly took on a broader political tone.
March to District Congress Office
The situation deteriorated further when DYFI and SFI activists organised a march to the District Congress Committee office. The march was described by organisers as a protest against what they called unfounded allegations made by the Youth Congress. As the procession moved through the area, it encountered groups of Youth Congress workers, leading to another round of clashes.
During this phase of the unrest, stones were reportedly thrown from both sides. The exchange caused injuries to several participants and damaged nearby property, according to preliminary police accounts.
Police Action and Crowd Control
Local police units were deployed to the scene as the clashes intensified. Officers faced resistance while attempting to separate the groups and restore order. After sustained efforts, police managed to disperse the crowds and prevent further escalation.
Authorities confirmed that cases have been registered against members of both organisations involved in the violence. Officials stated that the investigation would examine the sequence of events, including the alleged vandalism of posters and the subsequent clashes.
Injuries and Hospitalisation
Those injured during the confrontations were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment. Medical officials said the injuries ranged from minor to moderate, and no fatalities were reported. Police have not released an exact number of those hospitalised but indicated that all injured individuals were receiving care.
Ongoing Tensions in the Region
Kannur has a long history of political rivalry, particularly involving youth and student organisations aligned with different parties. Incidents of violence linked to political disputes have occurred in the past, prompting repeated calls from civil society groups for restraint and dialogue.
Senior police officials urged political organisations to avoid actions that could inflame tensions and disrupt public order. They also appealed to residents to remain calm as investigations continue.
Investigation Continues
Authorities said further legal action would depend on the findings of the ongoing probe. Statements from witnesses, injured parties, and organisation representatives are being recorded to establish responsibility for the clashes. Police reiterated that maintaining peace in the district remains a priority as political activities continue.
