Martyr’s Day Observed Nationwide

January 30 is observed annually as Martyr’s Day in India, honoring Gandhi’s sacrifice and remembering all those who gave their lives for the nation. Mahatma Gandhi, born Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, was assassinated on January 30, 1948, while on his way to attend his evening prayers. His death marked a profound moment in Indian history, leaving a lasting impact on the newly independent nation.

The year 2026 marks the 78th anniversary of his assassination, and commemorative events are being organized across the country to reflect on his message of peace and unity.

National Ceremony at Rajghat

As part of the official observances, the central government will hold a Martyr’s Day ceremony and an all-religious prayer meeting, known as Sarva-Dharma-Prarthana, at Rajghat in New Delhi. The event will take place in the presence of Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Rajghat Samadhi Committee Chairman Manohar Lal, among other dignitaries.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to pay floral tributes at Gandhi’s memorial during the ceremony. The annual prayer meeting brings together representatives of different faiths, reflecting Gandhi’s belief in religious harmony and mutual respect.

Remembering Gandhi’s Role in the Freedom Struggle

Mahatma Gandhi is remembered worldwide for his philosophy of Satyagraha and his unwavering belief in non-violent resistance as a means of achieving social and political change. His leadership transformed India’s freedom struggle into a mass movement that mobilized people across regions and communities.

One of the defining moments of this movement was the Dandi March in 1930, when Gandhi led a historic protest against the British-imposed Salt Law. The march became a symbol of civil disobedience and inspired similar acts of resistance throughout the country. Later, in 1942, Gandhi’s call for the Quit India Movement united millions in demanding an end to colonial rule.

Government Pays Tribute Through Digital Outreach

The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting also marked the occasion by sharing a video highlighting Gandhi’s contributions to India’s independence. In its message on X, the ministry remembered him as a leader whose commitment to truth and non-violence played a decisive role in shaping the nation’s destiny.

As India observes Martyr’s Day, Gandhi’s life and message continue to resonate, serving as a reminder of the power of peaceful action and ethical leadership in addressing the challenges of the present and the future.
