A player on The Chase made a detrimental mistake while going head-to-head with Anne Hegerty - and fans were outraged. Host Bradley Walsh welcomed four new players to the ITV quiz show, and after a great start, things quickly began to go downhill.
Murray from Dundee, Shen from London, Gail from Worcestershire and Jack from Leicester come together in the hope that they can take on a Chaser as a team. The first two players took the middle offers and made it back to the bench safely, each securing a place in the final. For Gail, things weren't looking quite so bright. She secured just three correct answers in the cashbuilder round, before following suit of her peers and also going for a middle offer. But one question seemed to leave her completely flummoxed - jeopardising her place in the game. She was asked: "Which of these was the name of a 1960s American folk-rock band?" The options given as answers were The Lovin' Spoonful, The Dancin' Plateful or The Helpin' Cupful.
As she hesitated and the counter ticked down, Bradley demanded: "We need an answer now!"
But that still didn't whip Gail into shape as she stood motionless, before Brad declared: "We are out of time." The player gasped and clutched her chest as she recognised her major mistake.
She then admitted that she would have chosen the correct answer - The Lovin' Spoonful. Explaining why she didn't answer at all, Gail told Brad: "I was waiting for the Grateful Dead."
"You deliberated for too long," said the host, before revealing that chaser Anne Hegerty had answered correctly - therefore knocking Gail out of the game.
Brad asked her: "Do you like winning like this?" Anne replied: "Not especially, no. It's unfortunate."
Fans at home were completely perplexed by the moment and shared their reactions on X.
One fumed: "How on earth can you forget to press the button on a one question shootout! Deservedly caught #Thechase."
Another echoed: "Failed to press the button! At least put something down! Useless contestant! #TheChase."
While a third added: "Why would you just press nothing? Unbelievable #TheChase."
Another raged: "That's a whole new level of OH FOR F*** SAKE! on #TheChase tonight. Oh Gail."
