Brooks Koepka, the five-time major champion, stirred a social media storm with a viral post that made news headlines across the globe.
After spending three years with LIV Golf, the golf superstar returned to the PGA Tour at the Farmers Insurance Open. He made the special announcement with a “homecoming” post.
The viral video shows Brooks practicing golf with an underlying caption, “We are so BacK.” This four-word jab, which served as the definitive mic-drop on his departure from the Saudi-backed league, gained over 500,000 views.
Koepka also expressed anxiety about the reception he would receive from fans upon his return.
“Maybe I’m a little nervous about that as well just to see how, I guess, how the fans respond to it. I hope that they’re excited. I hope that they’re happy that I’m out here.”
The golfer also revealed his contact with Tiger Woods during the time of intense pressure, “I called Tiger right away, then that process got the ball rolling.”
Switching leagues was not an easy decision for Koepka, as he had to pay a staggering $55 million to $90 million in the form of mandatory charitable donations, PGA Tour equity grants, and FedEx Cup bonuses required by the PGA Tour’s new “Returning Member Program.”
However, despite a high financial cost, Koepka made this move due to family reasons. “A lot’s gone on over the past five, six months with my family. That played a big role in coming back.”
