Traffic Rules: If you have received an incorrect e-challan in your name from a traffic camera, don't panic. You can get it corrected by filing an online complaint. Here's the complete process.
Traffic Rules: Nowadays, smart traffic cameras installed on roads keep an eye on every movement. For violations like jumping a red light, overspeeding, or illegal parking, e-challans are now sent to your mobile phone without stopping you on the spot. However, sometimes due to technical glitches, misreading of license plates, or server errors, challans are issued even without any fault.
It's natural to get angry when you suddenly receive a challan message on your phone. But panicking won't help. The good news is that the traffic department has provided a complete online system for filing complaints against incorrect e-challans. You can register a complaint from the comfort of your home, and if proven correct, the challan can be canceled.
How do incorrect challans occur?
An e-challan is essentially a digital traffic fine. When cameras installed on roads and intersections detect a violation, they take a picture of the vehicle and record the license plate number. The challan is then sent to the mobile number or email address of the person in whose name the vehicle is registered.
The problem arises when the camera misreads a blurry license plate, matches the number to another vehicle, or when there are discrepancies in the time and location. Sometimes, you might receive a challan for a place you haven't even visited. If you are completely confident that you haven't broken any rules, you can challenge that e-challan.
How to file an online complaint?
To complain about an incorrect challan, first visit the official website of the transport department: echallan.parivahan.gov.in. Click on the Complaint section. Then fill in details such as your name, mobile number, email, challan number, DL number, and state.
Then mention the city and location where the challan was issued, and clearly describe your problem. To strengthen your case, upload evidence such as CCTV screenshots, parking entry register, GPS location, or photos of your vehicle parked at home. After filling in all the information, enter the captcha and submit.
Are there other ways to file a complaint?
After submitting the complaint, you can also track the status of your case on the same website. If the department finds your evidence valid, the challan (traffic ticket) may be canceled or modified. Besides online submission, you can also file a complaint via email or phone call. For this, you can send an email to helpdesk-echallan@gov.in or call +91-120-4925505. Remember to provide the correct challan number and complete vehicle details when filing a complaint. A properly filed complaint can help you get relief from an unjustly issued challan.
