Whether it's sending money to someone or buying everyday essentials, we all use UPI for payments, but sometimes a small mistake while making a UPI payment can cause a lot of worry. After making the payment, when we look at the screen, we sometimes notice that the money has gone to the wrong UPI ID. Whether the transferred amount is small or large, worry lines appear on our foreheads after the payment is made. If money is transferred to the wrong account, it feels like everything is over, and the money will never be returned, but is this really true? Let's tell you what the rules say.
Why is it difficult to get a UPI payment back?
The UPI system is designed in such a way that the money is transferred instantly to the recipient's bank account. Therefore, by the time you see "Success" on the screen, the money has already been transferred from your account to the recipient's account. There is no cooling period or auto-reversal option. Even if the mistake is yours, the bank cannot simply take money from someone's account; legally, that money now belongs to the recipient.
If you want your money back, the recipient's consent is necessary. Checking the details before sending money is the sender's responsibility, so there is no forgiveness or second chance here.
What should be the first step after a wrong UPI transfer?
If you have accidentally transferred money to the wrong UPI ID or account, the first thing you should do is file a complaint through the app you used for the payment. Every transaction has a "Dispute" or "Wrong Transfer" option. Choosing this option won't get your money back immediately, but your complaint will be recorded.
As soon as you select one of these options, your bank contacts the recipient's bank. The recipient is informed that money has been accidentally transferred to their account, and they are asked if they are willing to return the money. If the recipient agrees, the money is returned within a few days. If the recipient refuses to return the money, the bank cannot help you, as it's not possible to deduct money from an account without the account holder's permission. Even if the transfer was made by mistake, filing a police complaint is advised, but there's no guarantee of getting your money back.
The harsh reality of UPI
UPI seems great when everything is working correctly because the money is transferred quickly to the recipient's account. However, the harsh reality of the rules is that you cannot force the recipient to return the money after a mistaken transfer. The recipient can only return the money if they agree to do so voluntarily. To prevent this from happening to you again, make sure to double-check the recipient's UPI ID and name before making a payment.
