Instagram Personalized Ads: The ads that appear on Instagram sometimes seem so personal that people suspect the Instagram app is listening to their conversations. This is why this fear and rumor spread so widely that Instagram's head, Adam Mosseri, had to issue a clarification. The company says that Instagram does not listen to your conversations through the microphone, but then the question arises: how do the ads become so accurate? You talk about something, and then you start seeing ads for that very thing. The answer is related to Instagram's tracking and data analysis.
Why do Instagram ads seem so personal?
According to Adam Mosseri, Instagram doesn't listen to users' voices, but rather deeply analyzes their activity. What posts you comment on, what you save, what you search for – all this data is used for advertising. In addition, through Meta Pixel and cookies, Instagram also tracks your activity on third-party websites. This is why, shortly after talking about something, you start seeing ads related to it.
How to control ads from Meta Accounts Center
Meta has consolidated the ad settings for Instagram, Facebook, and other platforms in one place: the Accounts Center. From here, you can decide which of your information Meta uses for advertising. In Ad Preferences, you can turn off Activity information received from Ad partners. This reduces the extent to which Instagram shows you ads based on data from external websites and apps.
Option to completely disconnect Meta tracking
If you want Meta to completely disconnect your activity from advertising, there is an option in the Accounts Center under Your information and permissions. Here, under your activity of Meta Technologies, you can disconnect your past activity. You can also turn off future activity so that Meta no longer uses your browsing and app usage for advertising.
Ads won't decrease; they'll just be less personalized.
It's important to understand that these settings will not stop ads from appearing on Instagram. The only difference will be that the ads will not be based on your personal preferences and online history. Meta is now showing ads in WhatsApp Status and features related to Meta AI. This means it's difficult to completely avoid ads, but it is possible to reduce how intrusive and overly personalized they feel.
