A Chinese tourist has died after a car carrying visitors overturned on the frozen surface of Lake Baikal in Russia, with investigators later saying the driver had never held a license.
The accident occurred on Wednesday on the ice near Olkhon Island in Russia’s Irkutsk Oblast, according to TASS. Four other Chinese tourists were injured in the crash, though their injuries were reported to be minor, Xinhua reported.
The Chinese Consulate General in Irkutsk confirmed the death and said it had activated an emergency response, contacting local authorities, tour operators, and medical services while assisting the injured tourists and coordinating follow-up arrangements.
Russian investigators later said the driver of the vehicle had never obtained a driver’s license. The Russian Investigative Committee has opened a criminal case, and the 41-year-old driver has been detained on suspicion of breaching safety regulations resulting in death.
