Historic decision came from PIL
This decision has come after a PIL filed by Jaya Thakur on December 10, 2024. The petition demanded that the Central Government's 'Menstrual Hygiene Policy for School Going Girls' be implemented across the country for adolescent girl students from classes 6 to 12. The Supreme Court had reserved its decision after hearing this petition, which has now come out as a strong message in favor of the girl students.
Through this order, the Supreme Court has made it clear that education is not limited to books only. Safe environment, health facilities and dignified behavior are also important parts of the education system. Provision of free sanitary pads and safe toilets for girl students will not only reduce the problem of school dropouts but will also give girls the opportunity to continue their studies with confidence.
