New Delhi. Nowadays most people pay through UPI. Be it milk, vegetables, rent or online shopping, everywhere people are using Google Pay, PhonePe and Paytm. But what if the money is deducted from the account and does not reach the person, then the first fear is that the money has been lost. In such cases, RBI has made clear rules, under which along with getting the money back, compensation can also be given.
What happens if money is deducted but payment fails?
If the UPI transaction fails and the money is deducted, it is the responsibility of the bank or the UPI app to resolve the issue within the stipulated time. Usually the money should be returned automatically within 1 day. Sometimes this process happens instantly, but in some cases there is a delay. This delay later helps you in getting compensation.

In which cases is compensation available?
As per RBI and NPCI rules, if the bank or UPI service provider does not resolve the failed transaction within the stipulated time, the user is entitled to compensation. This compensation is different from refund, that is, first your deducted money will be returned and then additional amount can be given after that. But note that this rule applies only when the fault lies with the bank, server or app.
How much compensation can I get?
The amount of compensation depends on the delay of the transaction. According to RBI rules, if the problem is not resolved even after the stipulated time limit, then a penalty is imposed on per day basis, which is given directly to the user. Although its amount is not very high, it is given as a right of the user so that the companies do not become negligent.
How to complain if UPI payment fails?
If your money has been deducted and not returned, then first file a complaint in the same UPI app through which you made the payment. Go to Transaction History, select Failed Payment and click on “Help” or “Report a Problem” option. Here you have to enter the UTR number or transaction ID, so that your complaint can be tracked quickly.
Compensation is not given on every failed transaction
It is important to understand that compensation is not available for every failed UPI transaction. If the mistake is on your part, such as entering an incorrect UPI ID, the network itself shutting down or the transaction being immediately reversed, then the compensation rule is not applicable in such cases.
Where to complain if the problem is not resolved?
If your problem is not resolved even after talking to both the app and the bank, then file a complaint on the official complaint portal of NPCI or RBI. Complaints lodged are seriously investigated and if found true, the user may get his money and compensation.
Keep these things in mind while using UPI
While making UPI payment, always check the correct UPI ID, have a strong internet connection and do not close the app until the payment is completed. Also, keep screenshots of every transaction, so that you have evidence when filing a complaint, if needed.
