IKEA announces date it's shutting major store - huge closing down sale launched

IKEA has announced it will close its Altens store in Aberdeen on Sunday, March 1, ahead of a move to a new city-centre location at Union Square. The Swedish furniture retailer launched a major clearance sale at the Altens branch on Thursday, offering shoppers the chance to pick up bargains before the store shuts. Discounts include up to 50% off ex-display furniture and at least 30% off ex-display home furnishings, with items available in-store only, while stocks last.

The Wellington Circle location in Altens operated as an Order and Collection Point, whereas the new Union Square store will adopt IKEA's modern Plan and Order Point format. The Union Square will include a collection point and the store will be taking over the former Decathlon unit giving shoppers access to about 250 homeware items available for immediate purchase.

Like the former Wellington Circle store, customers will also be able to enjoy bespoke kitchen, bedroom and storage planning services.

The Union Square store is set to open in spring 2026, though an exact date has yet to be confirmed. While the new store is smaller than the current Altens branch, the store will continue to provide collection, ordering, and returns services to customers.

The Altens site has been operating since 2016, offering residents a convenient option to shop locally rather than travelling to central belt stores.

Some concerns have been raised regarding parking at Union Square, The Press and Journal reported. Parking at Union Square will be free for the first 20 minutes, with standard charges of £4 per hour applying after that.

One customer wrote on Facebook: "I love IKEA and go to the Altens one regularly, but I feel it won't last long at Union Square, mainly due to parking."

Someone else said in a Google review after learning the news of the closure: "Going to miss this place, shame it's closing down."

Another person wrote on Facebook about the closing down sale:"We're there just now and it's so busy. Amazing bargains on ex display items but it's all going fast."

Kevin Coventry, Market Manager, IKEA UK & Ireland said: "As we prepare for an exciting new chapter for IKEA in Aberdeen, this sale offers customers the chance to bring home some of our well-known display pieces at some exceptional prices.

"Our upcoming move to Union Square will help us better meet the needs of customers by offering more convenient access to our full product range."
