For years, readers have whispered about the erotic undercurrent running through Wuthering Heights- the longing, the power, the pleasure tangled up in pain.
Since its release in 1847, Emily Brontë’s gothic novel has been defined by obsession, dominance and desire - emotions so intense they often feel physical, even when nothing explicit is happening on the page. For decades adaptations softened that tension, favouring romance over the darker, more uncomfortable pull between Heathcliff and Catherine. More recent interpretations, however ,including an upcoming film adaptation, have started leaning into the story’s raw emotion.
Now, ahead of the release of the new film - starring Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi - on February 13, Bloom Stories has unveiled a new audio adaptation, bringing that lingering tension to the surface. The erotic reimagining transforms Brontë’s classic into an immersive listening experience, exploring the desire always simmering beneath Heathcliff and Catherine’s destructive love.

Speaking to Bloom Stories' writer Jaimee Bell and the lead male voice behind Heathcliff, Sam Hughes, the pair reveal how they uncovered the story’s most intense moments, despite the novel never explicitly voicing them.
“Wuthering Heights isn’t overtly sexual, but it’s dripping with desire. The erotic potential is in what’s withheld - the longing, the obsession and the intensity simmering just beneath the surface,” Jaimee explained. “The challenge wasn’t inventing heat, but finding a way to represent what was already there but never explicitly represented on the page.”
“We leaned into the moments Brontë leaves unsaid. The novel is full of charged silences and near-misses, so we zoned in on those emotional flashpoints and imagined what might have happened behind closed doors and how the central characters might have felt.”
For Sam, the audio format offered freedom to reinterpret Heathcliff beyond existing screen portrayals. “It read like a different version of the character. While I drew elements from the original, this version was an interpretation based on the great script. That freedom made it easier, rather than feeling restricted by the existing portrayal,” he said.
While Bloom Stories was keen to portray the novel’s intensity, the duo say it was equally important to approach the story with clear ethical boundaries.
“It’s a dark love story, and we didn’t want to shy away from that. But at Bloom, boundaries matter. Our stories always focus on consensual, adult interactions that enable people to explore those hidden parts of themselves, whilst remaining true to our strict code of ethics,” Jaimee said.
“We’ve been careful to ensure the dynamic represented in our Wuthering Heights spin-off feels immersive, intense, escapist and reflective of the novel, but not exploitative or overly dark.”
As anticipation builds around the new film, some readers have expressed discomfort with revisiting Wuthering Heights, viewing it as a story rooted in abuse. The novel includes deeply troubling moments - from Heathcliff hanging Isabella’s dog on the night of their elopement, to his morbid fixation with Catherine’s grave, where he arranges for her coffin to be altered so their remains may one day mingle.
“Like much audio erotica, this story allows people to explore difficult or intense dynamics within a safe, clearly fictional environment. It’s about fantasy and role play, not endorsement,” Sam said. “When approaching these themes with care, respect and compassion for the listener, they can be handled gracefully and responsibly.”
Though the episode runs just 14 minutes long, it offers a steamy glimpse into the dark passion many readers have long felt pulsing beneath the novel’s surface. Bloom Stories’ erotic adaptation is available now on its platform and is free to listen to for a limited time.
