New Delhi : The Supreme Court’s interim stay on the new equity regulations issued by the University Grants Commission (UGC) to prevent caste-based discrimination in higher education institutions in India has sparked a new debate in political circles. On Thursday, the court imposed a stay on these rules, calling them vague, after which the national spokesperson of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Rajya Sabha MP Sudhanshu Trivedi refused to comment directly on the issue. However, she insisted that she would not allow injustice to any section.

Government fully dedicated to justice
Let us tell you that in the press conference held on Friday at BJP headquarters, national spokesperson and Rajya Sabha MP Sudhanshu Trivedi expressed caution regarding the Supreme Court’s decision on UGC regulation. He said that since the matter is pending in the court and stay order has been issued, it would not be appropriate to comment on it. Nevertheless, Trivedi made it clear that the BJP government is fully dedicated to ensuring justice to all citizens. He stressed that the party will not tolerate injustice in any form, irrespective of which community or class it is associated with.

Supreme Court imposed interim stay on UGC

The Supreme Court on Thursday imposed an interim stay on UGC’s equity regulation, terming it prima facie vague. The bench of Chief Justice Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi said that these rules can have very far-reaching effects, which can work to divide the society. The court acknowledged that there are some ambiguities in the regulation, the possibility of misuse of which cannot be ruled out. The decision raises questions over efforts to prevent caste discrimination in higher education, as the UGC had drafted these rules to ensure equality on campus.

Opposition parties welcomed SC’s decision
Opposition parties have strongly welcomed the decision of the Supreme Court. Senior Congress leader Pramod Tiwari accused BJP of creating conflict to divert attention from real issues. He said that the government is deliberately promoting social division by bringing such rules.

Social tension due to new rules of UGC
At the same time, Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief Mayawati, while posting on social media platform X, said that the new rules of UGC had created an atmosphere of social tension, and the court’s stay is an appropriate step. Mayawati suggested that this situation could have been avoided if the UGC had implemented the rules by taking all the parties into confidence and giving adequate representation to the general category in the scrutiny committee.

Akhilesh Yadav said the victory of justice
Samajwadi Party (SP) president Akhilesh Yadav also praised the decision, calling it a victory for social justice. Trinamool Congress and other parties also gave similar reactions. However, the Communist Party of India (ML) Liberation objected to some of the judges’ comments, believing that they appeared prejudicial. This united stand of the opposition shows that they can use this issue as a weapon against the BJP government, especially to target the social justice vote bank.
