Aidan Gillen is set to portray a father who will stop at nothing to protect his son in a gripping new ITV legal thriller.

The Irish actor, recognised for programmes such as Mayor of Kingstown, Game of Thrones and Kin, teams up with Anjli Mohindra and Shaun Parkes in the cast of Saviour, which the broadcaster says poses the question - how far would you go to shield those you cherish?

He takes on the role of Eddie, whose son Ben (Archie Fisher) becomes embroiled in a confrontation that leads to a man's death, after taking his father's police uniform for a fancy dress party, reports Dublin Live.

Anjili portrays criminal defence solicitor Indy Sangar, who is summoned to represent Ben against a murder charge and finds herself grappling with "police corruption, complicated racial politics, fervent press interest, a frustratingly traditional justice system and a defendant who is keeping secrets from her".

"But what she doesn't know is that, whilst fighting tooth and nail for Ben's freedom, deeply personal secrets of her own are finally coming to the surface and threatening to tear her career and her family apart," a synopsis for the show reveals.

Meanwhile, she faces off against Detective Inspector Jon Creasy (Mangrove star Shaun), who won't be swayed by Eddie, despite him being a fellow officer.

The six-part series - which has been penned by criminal barrister, novelist and screenwriter Imran Mahmood - is being filmed throughout Liverpool and is being produced by Nisha Parti's Parti Productions.

ITV's Director of Drama Polly Hill said: "I'm delighted to be working with Nisha Parti whose work I have long admired, and I'm really proud of the fact this is Imran Mahmood's first TV drama.

"Alongside Nisha, we are lucky to have the brilliant Peter Moffat and the team at Drama Republic bringing this fantastic drama to screen."

She remarked that "the casting of Anjil, Shaun and Aidan is exceptional".

"This is going to be a really exciting new drama that I am confident the audience will love," she said.
