Google overhauls Search with Gemini 3: What is changing

The update focuses on transforming Search from a static list of links into a "fluid experience" that encourages users to explore complex topics through back-and-forth dialogue -- just like the way it is done in an AI chatbot.

"People come to Search for an incredibly wide range of questions — sometimes to find information quickly, like a sports score or the weather, where a simple result is all you need. But for complex questions or tasks where you need to explore a topic deeply, you should be able to seamlessly tap into a powerful conversational AI experience," the company said.

From Snapshots to ‘AI Mode’
Google says that while users have long relied on Google for quick facts, including weather or sports scores, the company noted that complex tasks often require more than a single answer. To address this, Google is introducing a quick and easy transition to AI Mode. Users can now ask a follow-up question directly from an AI Overview on their mobile phones or tablets. The system maintains the full context of the initial search, allowing for a natural conversation without the need for the user to repeat details or start a new query.
New features are powered by Gemini 3
By integrating Gemini 3, which Google touts its most capable AI model to date, into the main search results page, the company aims to provide "best-in-class" responses for long or intricate questions. Internal testing revealed a strong user preference for this conversational flow, as it allows for deeper exploration while keeping the context of the research intact.

"Now, you can easily ask a follow-up question right from an AI Overview, and jump into a conversational back and forth with AI Mode. In our testing, we’ve found that people prefer an experience that flows naturally into a conversation — and that asking follow-up questions while keeping the context from AI Overviews makes Search more helpful," Google said in a blog post.

"It’s one fluid experience with prominent links to continue exploring: a quick snapshot when you need it, and deeper conversation when you want it. So next time you have a question, find your nearest Google search bar, and just ask anything," it explained.
