The Boys' Homelander star lands very different role in Netflix surfing drama

The Boys' Antony Starr is set to tackle a completely different character in Netflix's forthcoming surfing drama, Breakers.

The New Zealand performer has become synonymous with playing the power-mad superhero Homelander across all four seasons of the Prime Video sensation.

Before his appearance in the fifth and concluding season of Eric Kripke's series, Starr has committed to fronting a markedly different venture for the competing platform.

Netflix's new surfing series is under the direction of Pete Jackson (The Death of Bunny Munro) and will be produced by BBC Studios' Clerkenwell Films, the production company behind streaming successes Baby Reindeer and The End of the F***ing World.

The synopsis for Breakers states: "Two best friends go backpacking in Australia and are soon drawn into a seemingly perfect community of surfers led by a charismatic but mysterious figure", reports the Mirror.

Starr is cast as a character called Brando, although it remains unclear whether he'll play one of the two companions or the cryptic surfing community leader referenced in the description.

At present, he is the sole confirmed cast member attached to this new Netflix venture.

Further particulars regarding the storyline and launch date remain limited for now, but excellence appears guaranteed given the impressive creative team already assembled. The series will be helmed by directors Mary Nighy (Say Nothing, Industry) and Ng Choon Ping (What It Feels Like for a Girl, Femme), with executive producers including Gavin O'Grady (Somewhere Boy, This Way Up), alongside Petra Fried and Wim De Greef (both behind Baby Reindeer and The End of the F***ing World).

Filming for the forthcoming series is currently taking place in Western Australia.

Whilst promotional images from Breakers remain under wraps, audiences shouldn't anticipate The Boys star appearing vastly different from his polished yet deranged portrayal of Homelander.

In related news, the Prime Video superhero series is gearing up to unveil its fifth and concluding season, with Starr's formidable antagonist set for another confrontation with Billy Butcher (played by Karl Urban) and Hughie (Jack Quaid).

The two-part opener arrives on 8th April, with six additional episodes dropping weekly through to 20th May. Hamilton star Daveed Diggs is set to join the final season's ensemble.

Starr's new project emerges mere months after he was photographed on set portraying pop art legend Andy Warhol for the forthcoming biographical film Samo Lives.

Helmed by Julius Onah, the picture features Kelvin Harrison Jr. as legendary street artist Jean-Michel Basquiat, supported by a stellar ensemble cast featuring Danny Ramirez, Dane DeHaan, Kathryn Newton, Chase Sui Wonders and Jeffrey Wright, who famously played Basquiat in the 1996 biographical drama alongside David Bowie as Warhol.

The Boys actor was photographed last October on the New York City set of the production, appearing virtually unrecognisable beneath facial prosthetics and sporting Warhol's iconic white wig.

Netflix's Breakers does not yet have a release date. The Boys season 5 premieres 8th April on Prime Video.
