Nowadays, second-hand mobile phones are available at very low prices on some buy-and-sell websites and social media platforms, but these deals can often be risky. Keeping this in mind, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) recently issued an alert to the public. The department stated that while used mobile phones may look perfect, it is crucial to verify their safety and legitimacy before purchasing them. Today, we will explain in detail how you can do this.
Special Caution is Necessary
Buyers should exercise special caution when buying second-hand phones. These phones may sometimes be linked to theft, fraud, or other criminal activities. In such a case, if you end up with such a device, you will be held responsible. Therefore, always check the IMEI number before purchasing.
How to Verify the IMEI of a Second-Hand Phone?
You can use the Sanchar Saathi app or website to check if your second-hand phone is stolen. Follow these steps:
First, go to the ceir.sancharsaathi.gov.in website.
Now, log in using your mobile number and OTP.
Then, enter the 15-digit IMEI number of the phone.
If the IMEI appears blocked or blacklisted, the phone is stolen or suspicious.
How to Verify via SMS?
Open your message box.
Type: KYM (space) IMEI number
Send this message to 14422.
The reply will tell you whether the phone is clean or blacklisted.
How to Find the Phone's IMEI Number?
You can usually find the IMEI number on the phone's box. However, if you don't have the box, you can also find it using a code. To find it, dial *#06#. The IMEI number will immediately appear on the screen.
