In case of wrong UPI transfer, the money reaches the receiver’s account immediately and there is no option of automatic reversal. The bank cannot withdraw the amount without the consent of the receiver. In such cases, complaint on UPI app is necessary, but returning the money completely depends on the consent of the other person.
UPI Wrong Transfer Rules: In the era of digital payments, transferring money from UPI to the wrong account has become a common but serious problem. This situation arises when the sender hastily selects the wrong UPI ID or name. Since the transaction is completed in real time, the money reaches the receiver’s account immediately. In such a situation, all three, bank, UPI app and receiver are connected to this process. According to the rules, the bank cannot deduct the amount without permission, hence whether the money will be returned or not depends entirely on the consent of the receiver and the complaint process.
What happens after wrong UPI transfer
The UPI system is designed in such a way that transactions are completed in real time. As soon as ‘Success’ appears on the screen, the amount has been transferred from your account to the other person’s account. There is neither a cooling period nor the facility of auto reversal.
According to law, the bank cannot withdraw money from the receiver’s account without his permission. Even if the transfer is done by mistake, the responsibility lies with the sender whether he checked the correct UPI ID and name or not.
Right way to get money back
In case of wrong transfer, first of all a complaint should be lodged in the same UPI app through which the payment was made. There is an option of Dispute or Wrong Transfer in the transaction history, where a complaint can be lodged.
After this your bank contacts the receiver’s bank. If the other person admits his mistake and agrees to return the money, the amount can be returned in a few days. But if he refuses, the bank has only limited rights.
When the receiver refuses to return the money
In such a situation the bank cannot take any action on its own. Deducting money without the consent of the account holder is against the rules. As a last option, a complaint can be made to the police, but even in this there is no guarantee of getting the money back.
This is why as fast and easy as UPI is, there is a need to be equally cautious. A small carelessness can cause big loss.
