Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will present the Union Budget 2026-27 in the Lok Sabha today. This will be his ninth consecutive budget and the eyes of the entire country are fixed on it. The budget speech is expected to begin around 11 am, revealing the government’s economic direction and priorities for the next financial year.

Before presenting the budget, there will be a meeting of the Union Cabinet in the morning. In this meeting, the budget proposals will be formally approved under the chairmanship of the Prime Minister. Only after this the Finance Minister will reach Parliament for the budget speech.

Ninth consecutive budget and changed traditions

Nirmala Sitharaman took over as Finance Minister in 2019. From then till today she has been continuously presenting the budget. A major highlight of his tenure has been to bring changes in the method of budget presentation. From the year 2021, he started presenting the digital budget with a ‘Made in India’ tablet instead of the traditional briefcase, which continues even today.

Main focus of budgets so far

In previous budgets, the Finance Minister has mainly focused on increasing government spending on infrastructure, such as roads, railways and other development works. Apart from this, his focus has also been on simplifying the tax regime, promoting digital services and supporting startups and MSME sector. The government has attempted to maintain stability despite economic challenges by continuing welfare schemes.

What are the expectations from Budget 2026?

This budget is coming at a time when the government is facing the dual challenge of creating employment opportunities, giving impetus to private investment and meeting the needs of the common people while controlling inflation. It is expected that in this budget, some tax relief may be announced for the middle class and salaried class. Besides, important announcements can also be made for the rural economy and agriculture sector.

Today’s budget speech will decide which sectors the government will give priority to in the coming year and what steps it will take to boost the country’s economy. Only after the budget will it be clear what impact it will have on the common man’s pocket.
