According to OpenAI, 99.9% of users have already switched to GPT-5.2. Given this, the company has decided to remove the GPT-4o, GPT-4.1, GPT-4.1 mini, and OpenAI o4-mini models from ChatGPT starting February 13th. The company believes it's better to allocate resources to the models that most people are using rather than maintaining the older ones. However, this isn't the first time an attempt has been made to remove GPT-4o. A similar attempt was made before, but it had to be reinstated due to user backlash. This time, however, the company has decided to permanently discontinue it.
Where will the changes be implemented?
OpenAI is changing not only the model's capabilities but also its behavior. Therefore, changes can also be expected in the new GPT-5.2 model. According to the company, there will be changes in personality and tone, allowing users to customize the chatbot's responses to their liking.
Creative Support: A better algorithm will be available for creative writing and complex ideas, resulting in more accurate and superior output.
Reduced Unnecessary Refusals: The AI often refused to answer questions in the name of safety, which is now being addressed. It is expected that users will now receive answers to these questions.
18+ Mode: The company will soon introduce a new mode based on the principle of treating adults as adults, providing greater freedom of expression with appropriate safety standards.
What will happen to your chats on the old ChatGPT models?
Users can continue interacting with the old models until February 13, 2026. After that, all old chats will be automatically routed to GPT-5.2. Image generation will also now rely on the GPT-5 family of models. While these models are being discontinued for general users, developers will still have access to them via the API (Application Programming Interface). OpenAI has clarified that sufficient time and notice will be given before the API is retired, allowing developers to update their applications.
