Budget 2026: Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman today did not increase the EPF wage ceiling by Rs 15,000 in Budget 2026. Along with this, there has been no change in the EPF wage limit required for enrollment in Employees’ Provident Fund (EPF), Employees’ Pension Scheme (EPS) and Employees’ Deposit Linked Insurance (EDLI). EPF wage ceiling has remained the same since 2014. Chartered accountant Akshay Jain, partner, NPV & Associates LLP, says if the EPF wage ceiling were increased, employees could create a much larger, tax-efficient retirement corpus without being subject to market- risks.

What would have happened if EPF wage ceiling was increased earlier?

Pratik Vaidya, Managing Director and Chief Vision Officer, Karma Management Global Consulting Solutions Pvt Ltd., said, “If the EPF wage ceiling had been increased earlier, employees would have benefited from greater compounding of their retirement savings over the years. A timely revision would have allowed EPF savings to keep pace with rising salaries and cost of living, thereby providing better retirement preparation and Better pension results would have been ensured. What is EPF wage ceiling?

Jain says that EPF wage ceiling is the maximum monthly salary (Basic + DA) that is used to decide mandatory enrollment for EPF, EPS and EDLI schemes. Jain adds, “This is very important because it decides who gets to participate in these social security schemes, which directly impacts retirement savings, pension amounts and increases long-term financial security.”
