Locals have been left gutted by the closure of their excellent and beautiful pub that closed today. The Brown Trout in Lamberhurst, Kent, was forced to shut down due to financial challenges, a concern that is being experienced across the wider industry.

In January, the pub announced it would close on February 1, thanking the community for its support and pleading for continued support for local establishments.

The statement reads: "With great sadness, we have made the difficult decision to close The Brown Trout on the 1st of February.

"We have tried so hard to make it work, but the rising costs and overwhelming overheads mean that pubs are facing an increasingly uncertain future.

"Thank you from the bottom of our hearts to those that have truly supported us you know who you are. We have truly loved being part of this wonderful community and are incredibly grateful for the memories we've shared.

"We remain hopeful that someone lovely will come along and breathe new life back into the pub, for the sake of the community it serves."

The Facebook post was flooded with comments from loyal customers and pub-goers who were devastated by the news. Many shared their appreciation for The Brown Trout, sharing memories and offering their support to the team.

One person wrote: "This is so sad to hear you have been our local since we moved here and we always looked forward to your quiz nights with Lord Ted and the amazing food, especially your outstanding carvery and the friendly warm atmosphere."

Another commented: "So sad. We had the most amazing fish and chips tonight at an amazing price!"

A third said: "Sorry to see you close. You're a favourite for a Sunday roast with family."

Another local, pointing out how the current economic climate has had a massive hit on pubs, also described the closure as "very sad news".

They added: "We like to support local pubs. Cost of living makes going out now 'a treat - special occasions'. This Government has totally screwed the working people."

The Brown Trout owner's "final ask" to locals is to "please continue to support your local pubs," as "it really is 'use it or lose it'.'" They also assured customers that they can find them at their sister pub, The Star, in Matfield, for events and delicious food.
