UK drivers urged to carry out weekly task in February

Drivers all over the UK are being urged to carry out a very important task once a week in February. If you have a car, you'll know that they aren't cheap to run, with factors like insurance, tax and petrol all adding to the cost.

There is a glimmer of good news, with petrol prices in the UK dropping to their lowest level since summer 2021. The average litre is now around £1.32 according to the RAC, saving motorists almost £3 on a typical tank. But as we know, the UK is very rainy, and these conditions can influence how far your car is able to travel in between fill-ups.

In the recent aftermath of Storm Chandra, many drivers might be wondering how to make their fuel go further. Rain increases rolling resistance and can make engines work harder, meaning fuel consumption can rise even when petrol is cheaper.

This is where taking care of your vehicle really matters. A clean and well-looked-after vehicle can make those savings at the pump go even further - ensuring you really get the most out of every drop of petrol.

Ash Young, car expert at 1dot, has shared a simple tip for drivers that will allow even more savings to be made at the fuel pump. And it couldn't be simpler - all you need to do is make sure you're emptying your boot every week.

This task is really important because when your car boot is full, your engine has to work a lot harder. And according to the expert, this only increases during heavy rain.

But removing this weight eliminates this problem, which is why you should aim to do it once a week.

Another hugely important task to remember is to check your tyre pressure every other week. Rain increases rolling resistance, so if your tyres are flatter than they should be, this will make driving a lot more difficult and expensive.

More frequently, you should also be cleaning your mirrors and windscreen every two days. Better visibility means you'll brake less often, which is very important for UK motorists, as it regularly rains with the roads becoming slippery and unsafe every time it does.

Not only this, but braking and accelerating fast uses up more fuel and therefore more money - so being mindful of your actions could help your cash and your fuel go a lot further.
