After a fairly uneventful January transfer window forLiverpool, the Reds are planning for a busy Deadline Day. Following animpressive 4-1 victory over Newcastle United on Saturday that ended their five-match league winless streak, the Merseyside giants could be set for a new arrival.

Lutsharel Geertruida is said to be nearing a move to Anfield, having spent the first half of the season at Sunderland from parent club RB Leipzig. A transfer to the reigning Premier League champions would spell a reunion between the Dutchman and his former Feyenoord boss, Arne Slot.

The transfer would be a welcome sight for fans given the club's dire defensive situation with Conor Bradley, Jeremie Frimpong, Joe Gomez and Giovanni Leoni all sidelined with injuries.

The Dutchman is said to be nearing a move to Liverpool in which he'll become their first senior signing in the January transfer window. Having joined Sunderland on loan at the start of the 2025/26 campaign, Lutsharel Geertruida has started 10 of the 17 Premier League games he's appeared in.

He's made a positive impact at the Stadium of Light but the opportunity to move to Anfield and reunite with Arne Slot, who he played under at Feyenoord, looks like it's proven too hard to resist.

According toMail Sport, the versatile defender has already told his Sunderland team-mates that he's leaving in news that's said to have left them 'upset'. Regis Le Bris' side will be seeking a compensation package for allowing his exit as well as securing a replacement in the likelihood of his departure.

It was two weeks ago when Dominik Szoboszlai first opened up about negotiations surrounding a contract extension with Liverpool. He's since discussed the situation again and did so after a stellar performance in Liverpool's 4-1 win over Newcastle United.

The 25-year-old returned to right-back duties against the Magpies - a position he's played in several times this season due to the injury issues of Conor Bradley and Jeremie Frimpong.

After admitting he's keen on extending his Liverpool career, the midfielder was asked on whether he could continue playing at right-back, to which he immediately shut down. He answered: "Not long-term, not even medium-term to be honest in my head.

"As I've said before I'm a midfielder and hopefully our right-back is going to come back from injury and I can get back in the middle. But if the team needs me or the coach needs me there I will play and try to give my best but now Wata (Endo) is ready to play, also Curtis (Jones) is ready to play there, so we have quite a few options now.

"I think midfielder is more me than the right-back, I am close to the goal and I can be more dangerous. I feel from the right position I am far from the goal but I am doing everything for the team so we don't concede, that's the most important thing when you play defence, and also help up front with crosses and long balls, whatever the team needs."
