The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is planning to organize the World Test Championship (WTC) final of the 2025-2027 cycle in the country. A proposal in this regard will be formally presented later. Earlier, the final of the first edition of the WTC was played in 2021 at Southampton and the final of the second edition was played at the Oval in 2023. At the same time, in 2025 i.e. this year the final of the World Test Championship will be played at Lord’s next month.
According to news agency PTI, this was discussed during the ICC Chief Executives Committee meeting in Zimbabwe last month, where BCCI was represented by IPL Chairman Arun Dhumal. Former BCCI Secretary Jai Shah is the current ICC President, having taken over from Greg Barclay in December 2024.
A source indicated, ‘If India reaches the next WTC final, it will be a great event for the fans.’ But even if India does not play in the final, many people will be interested in the match between two other top teams. India has reached the WTC finals twice so far. It lost against New Zealand in 2021 and Australia in 2023.
The Indian team could not qualify for the finals of this edition i.e. 2025. The team was out of the race for the World Test Championship final after losing the series against New Zealand and then Australia. India’s regular Test captain Rohit Sharma has retired from Test cricket. In such a situation, Team India will enter the new season of the Test Championship with a new captain. Shubhman Gill is currently leading in the race for captaincy.
The Indian team will start the 2025-27 cycle of the World Test Championship (WTC) with a five-match Test series against England. The first test match will be played in Leeds from 20th June. India last toured England in 2021-22. At that time the team had gone to play the Test series under the leadership of Virat Kohli. However, due to Corona, the fifth Test match was played and Bumrah held the captaincy at that time. The series ended in a draw at 2-2.
