Budget 2026: Chabahar Port did not get a penny, why did India step back?

There is tension going on between Iran and America. Recently some news claimed that India is withdrawing from Iran’s Chabahar Port. Although the Ministry of External Affairs denied these claims and talks are ongoing with the US, no funds have now been allocated to Chabahar Port in the Union Budget. After this, new questions have started arising?

An amount of Rs 400 crore was allocated in 2024-25. The same amount was allocated in the revised estimate for 2025-26 also. But this year India has not made any allocation. Recently America has imposed new sanctions on Iran. Only after this the Government of India has taken this step. India was spending about Rs 100 crore every year on the project.

In 2015, an agreement was signed between Iran and India on developing Chabahar Port. In response to Pakistan’s Gwadar port, India is developing this port in Iran’s Sistan-Baluchistan province. This port is strategically important because it connects India to the 7,200 km long International North-South Transport Corridor. Through Chabahar, India can deliver its goods not only to Iran and Afghanistan, but also to Armenia, Azerbaijan, Russia, Central Asia and Europe.

In September last year, America had announced sanctions on Iran, but gave six months exemption to Chabahar Port. This exemption given to India will end from 26th April. Recently Trump threatened countries doing business with Iran with a 25 percent tariff. After this, India is discussing other options.

In fact, the Economic Times had claimed in one of its reports that India is in the process of transferring about 120 million US dollars to directly eliminate the risk on the Chabahar Port project. It was also said that India is considering creating a new unit, so that the development work of Chabahar Port can be taken forward.

When External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal was asked about the withdrawal from Chabahar Port, he denied the media report and said that India’s talks with the US will continue on this matter. India is considering several options regarding its participation.
