For millions across India, a cup of hot tea has never felt complete without a pack of Parle-G biscuits. Dunked, shared and often finished in one sitting, Parle-G was never just a snack — it was part of daily life, childhood memories and family routines.

That is why news of the shutdown and redevelopment of the historic Parle-G factory at Vile Parle has struck an emotional chord, signalling the end of an era for one of India’s most recognisable industrial landmarks.

The story behind the iconic Parle-G girl

One of the most enduring mysteries around Parle-G has been the identity of the baby girl on its wrapper. According to company officials, the child is not a real person. The image is an illustration created in the 1960s by artist Maganlal Dahiya for Everest Creative.

The design symbolised innocence, purity and family values. Over the years, speculation linked the image to various well-known personalities, but the ambiguity itself became a powerful marketing tool, keeping the brand etched in public memory.

Factory redevelopment approved

The Parle-G factory, established in 1929, will now make way for a large commercial complex. Earlier this month, the Maharashtra State Environment Impact Assessment Authority granted clearance for redevelopment of the 13.54-acre site in Vile Parle East. The approval allows demolition of 21 old structures on the premises.

Biscuit production at the facility had already ceased around 2016, but the site remained a symbol of Mumbai’s industrial heritage.

A legacy beyond biscuits

Founded by Mohanlal Dayal Chauhan, Parle Products began by making candies before shifting to biscuits in 1939. Alongside Parle-G, the company went on to create household names like Monaco, Hide & Seek, Krackjack, Melody and Kismi.

While buildings may change, Parle-G’s place in Indian hearts remains untouched — a reminder that some tastes, once formed, never truly fade.
