AR Rahman vs Rani Mukerji: This whole debate started during a recent talk show/interview, where lobbying and discrimination in the film industry was being discussed. A.R. Rahman praised the industry during this time, but Rani Mukherjee’s reaction sparked a new debate on social media.
A.R. Rahman’s statement
A.R. Rahman described the film industry as one of the safest and fairest places in the world. He said that when we are in the studio, we do not see which caste or religion the person in front belongs to. We just focus on ‘tune’ and ‘music’. Rehman stressed that the industry only salutes talent and there is no discrimination on the basis of religion.
Rani Mukherjee’s counterattack
Rani Mukherjee respected Rahman’s words and said a very practical thing. He hinted that not everything in the industry is as ‘white’ as it seems. He said that even though discrimination on the basis of religion may not be seen openly, discrimination on the basis of ‘coteries’ and ‘favoritism’ is still a bitter reality. Rani indirectly hinted that sometimes artists are isolated because of their background or their ideology. He said, “If we claim to be professionals, we also have to recognize the invisible walls that block the path of talented people.”
Rehman’s old ‘gang’ controversy
Rani Mukherjee’s words are also gaining weight because some time ago A.R. Rehman had admitted that there was a ‘gang’ working in Bollywood, which was preventing him from getting work. Rani’s supporters say that the industry which Rahman is now calling discrimination-free, he himself has become a victim of the factionalism of the same industry.
Public divided on social media
After this debate, social media has been divided into two parts. He says that music and art are truly beyond boundaries and Rahman is the biggest example of this. Many people say that Rani has spoken the bitter truth which people in the industry often try to hide.
