Speaking to Simi Garewal on ‘Rendezvous with Simi Garewal’, she said about her childhood, “I had a wonderful childhood. We lived in Hyderabad all my life. After my parents’ divorce, I lived with my grandparents. My mother was a teacher, so I spent most of my time with her mother. My grandmother used to pray and read books and I grew up in that environment. I was very shy, I had no voice, in fact, even after becoming a heroine.” Tabu’s elder sister Farah was an actress in the 80s.

In the same interview, Tabu also spoke about not wanting to meet her father, as he is now busy with his personal life, and also explained why she did not use his surname ‘Hashmi’.

I’ve never used it, I’ve never felt the need to use my father’s last name. My last name has always been Tabassum Fatima, which is my middle name. Fatima was my last name in school. I don’t remember it. My sister met him occasionally, but I never wanted to meet him. I don’t want to know about him. I am happy with who I am, how I grew up. I am completely satisfied with my life.

When Tabu was just 3 years old, her parents divorced and her father remarried, having two daughters from his second wife. Tabu has never been married and has been open about her single life in several interviews.
