New Delhi: Political turmoil continues over the general budget presented in Parliament by Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman. After the opposition parties, now Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) national president Mayawati has also launched a scathing attack on the central government. He has raised serious questions on the intentions of the government, calling the budget supportive of capitalists and rich people.

Mayawati said that any budget is a mirror of the country’s government’s policy, intentions and its actions, character and face. This clearly shows whether the thinking of the government is actually pro-poor, pro-Bahujan and in the national interest or whether it is promoting capitalist thinking.

Questions raised on the intentions of the government

The BSP chief cornered the government and said that it should make it clear how much relief this budget will provide to the common poor. He said that nothing will be achieved by just talking, rather it is more important to implement the plans with the right intentions.

‘Let big names and philosophies not be small’

Taking a dig at the schemes and promises announced in the budget, Mayawati said that their names are very big, but it has to be ensured that their philosophy does not remain small at the grassroots level. He said, “It is important not only to talk about the welfare of the entire society but also to implement it with the right intentions.”

Referring to the welfare constitution of Baba Saheb Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar, he said that it is also worth seeing how much importance has been given to the government sector to make the country self-reliant.

What happened to the promises of the last budget?

Referring to the last budget, Mayawati directly asked the government as to how far the claims, promises and expectations made last year have been fulfilled today. He asked whether those promises had become just a mere ritual and had there been any real change in the lives of common people?

He stressed that bringing qualitative change in the lives of people is more important than GDP figures, which is directly to public interest and national interest. He urged the government that these aspects must be assessed before approving the budget.
