Snowfall –  A widespread overnight snowfall swept across South Korea late Monday into early Tuesday, creating difficult travel conditions during the morning rush and prompting swift responses from local authorities. Weather officials said snow would continue to fall in several eastern and southern regions throughout the day, though conditions in the capital were expected to gradually improve.

The snowfall began late Monday and intensified overnight, coating roads, sidewalks, and residential areas. While the accumulation in Seoul was not extreme, the timing of the snow posed challenges for early commuters and delivery services across the metropolitan area.

Snow Advisory Lifted but Precautions Remain

The Korea Meteorological Administration lifted its heavy snow advisory for Seoul at 4 a.m. local time. Despite the advisory being withdrawn, city officials remained on alert. Snow removal vehicles were deployed across major roads and residential streets during the early hours to spread deicing materials and reduce the risk of accidents.

Authorities focused on bridges, slopes, and high-traffic intersections, where icy patches tend to form quickly during subzero temperatures. Crews continued operations well into the morning to ensure safer conditions for drivers and pedestrians.

Public Alerts Issued for Morning Commuters

At around 6 a.m., the Seoul Metropolitan Government issued an emergency mobile alert warning residents about slippery roads caused by the overnight snowfall. The message encouraged commuters to use public transportation where possible and to allow extra travel time.

Traffic congestion was reported in several parts of the city as vehicles moved cautiously on slick surfaces. Bus and subway services continued operating normally, though officials urged passengers to remain careful when entering and exiting stations.

Light Snow Expected Around Capital Region

Meteorological officials said parts of the greater Seoul area could see additional light snow during the morning hours, with accumulations expected to remain below 0.1 centimeters. While minimal, even small amounts of fresh snow could refreeze, maintaining hazardous road conditions through the early part of the day.

Cloudy skies were forecast across much of the country before gradually clearing later, offering some relief as temperatures stabilize.

Heavier Snowfall Forecast for Eastern and Southern Areas

More significant snowfall was expected outside the capital. The eastern islands of Ulleung and Dokdo were forecast to receive between 5 and 10 centimeters of snow, with strong winds potentially reducing visibility.

In the southwest, parts of South and North Jeolla provinces were expected to see accumulations ranging from 3 to 8 centimeters. These regions were advised to prepare for localized travel disruptions, particularly on rural roads.

Meanwhile, Gangwon Province, the central city of Daejeon, and sections of South and North Gyeongsang provinces were forecast to receive between 2 and 7 centimeters of snow. Mountainous areas in these regions were expected to see heavier accumulation than urban centers.

Temperatures Remain Below Seasonal Averages

As of 5 a.m., temperatures remained well below freezing across most major cities. Seoul recorded minus 2.4 degrees Celsius, while Incheon saw minus 3.7 degrees. Gwangju reported minus 3.3 degrees, and Daegu experienced colder conditions at minus 5.9 degrees.

Daytime highs were forecast to range between minus 1 and plus 6 degrees Celsius nationwide, offering limited thawing during daylight hours. Officials cautioned that melting snow could refreeze after sunset, extending slippery conditions into the evening.

Authorities Urge Continued Caution

Weather officials and local governments urged residents to remain cautious throughout the day, particularly in areas expecting additional snowfall. Drivers were advised to reduce speed, maintain safe distances, and remain alert for black ice.

Emergency services remained on standby, while municipalities continued monitoring weather updates to adjust response measures as needed.
