In a shocking case from Uttar Pradesh’s Deoria district, a minor boy was allegedly duped of jewellery worth nearly Rs 85 lakh after being lured with momos by local youths. The incident came to light after the boy’s family discovered that valuables kept at home had gone missing.

The victim is the minor son of Vimalesh Mishra, a priest at a temple in Varanasi. The boy, who studies in Class 7 and lives in Bhagwanpur Tiwari village under Rampur Karkhana police station limits, reportedly developed an addiction to eating momos and began visiting a shop near Dumri Chauraha on the Deoria–Kasya road every day.

According to police, three youths running the momo stall gradually won the boy’s trust and told him he would be given momos only if he brought something valuable in return. Over time, the teenager allegedly started taking jewellery from his home and handing it over to them, receiving momos in exchange.

The jewellery belonged to the priest’s wife and sister and was kept in a cupboard at home. The fraud came to light on Sunday morning when the priest’s sister visited the house and asked for her jewellery. When the cupboard locker was opened, the family was shocked to find all the ornaments missing.

In his complaint, the priest stated that upon questioning, his son admitted to giving the jewellery to the shopkeepers. Acting on the complaint, police detained one man and one woman late Sunday evening and recovered some of the stolen jewellery based on their disclosures.

Police said the boy initially used cash from home to buy fast food but later began taking jewellery without the family’s knowledge.

Rampur Karkhana Station House Officer Devendra Singh said the case is under investigation.
