The government has announced in the Union Budget 2026-27 the construction of a girls' hostel in every district of the country. The aim is to provide safe accommodation to female students and working women from remote areas.
Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman made a major announcement regarding education and women's empowerment in the Union Budget 2026-27. The government has announced the construction of a girls' hostel in every district of the country. The objective is to provide safe and convenient accommodation to female students and working women from remote and rural areas. So, let's tell you how and who will get accommodation in these girls' hostels that will be opened in every district of the country.
Safe and Convenient Accommodation for Female Students
This announcement in the budget is expected to provide great relief to girls who leave their homes, especially in rural areas, to study in cities for higher education. Currently, due to the lack of girls' hostel facilities in many districts, female students have to travel 40 to 50 kilometers daily or live in unsafe conditions in rented rooms. The new hostels will provide them with the facility of living in a safe environment. In addition, the announcement of girls' hostels will also benefit female students pursuing courses in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). According to education experts, resolving the accommodation problem could increase the enrollment of girls in STEM courses. The Ministry of Education was already working on this scheme, which has now been approved through the budget.
Target of 50 Percent Enrollment by 2035
Under the new education policy, the government has set a target of increasing the enrollment of female students in higher education to 50 percent. Currently, this figure is around 29 percent. The government believes that the construction of girls' hostels in every district will increase the participation of girls in higher education and help in achieving this target.
Working Women Will Also Benefit
The benefits of this scheme will not be limited to female students only. Women coming from other districts for work will also be able to avail the facility of staying in these hostels. This will provide women with safe accommodation and make it easier for them to choose better employment opportunities. The Finance Minister stated in her budget speech that this year's budget prioritizes development, inclusion, and social empowerment. The construction of girls' hostels in every district is considered a significant step in this direction, which will strengthen women's participation in both education and employment.
