News India Live, Digital Desk: Pakistan’s largest province Balochistan seems to be turning into a ‘cemetery’ at the moment. The separatist organization Baloch Liberation Army (BLA) has launched massive simultaneous attacks across the province under ‘Operation Hereof’. Within just one day, more than 50 attacks have been carried out on Pakistani security forces, police posts and infrastructure. The intensity of these attacks is so high that the Pakistani Army has been forced to retreat. According to local reports, internet and mobile services have been shut down in the entire province so that coordination among the rebels can be broken. Pakistani Army helpless: ‘Operation Hereof’ increases problems. BLA’s Majeed Brigade and Fateh Squad have changed their strategy this time. They have not only targeted military bases but have also taken control of major highways. Carnage on the roads: In Musakhel area, insurgents stopped trucks and buses, checked identity cards and shot at least 23 civilians belonging to Punjab province. Railway link destroyed: The strategic Bolan railway bridge connecting Balochistan with Sindh and Punjab has been blown up by an IED blast, causing disruption of trains. Movement has come to a complete standstill. Capture of cantonments: Rebels claim to have captured several military posts near Bela and Gwadar. Dead bodies and smoke on the streets: Suspense increased due to internet shutdown. The pictures and videos coming from Balochistan (which were leaked before the shutdown) are heart-wrenching. Burning vehicles and dead bodies of Pakistani soldiers have been seen scattered on the roads at many places. Information blackout: The Pakistan government has imposed a ‘digital iron curtain’ to stop the flow of information across the province. China’s concern: These attacks have especially occurred in areas where China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) projects are underway. Security around Gwadar Port has been put on ‘high alert’. Pakistan government’s side: “We will take revenge selectively.” Pakistani Home Minister Mohsin Naqvi and Army Chief General Asim Munir have held an emergency meeting on this situation. The government claims that they have killed more than 12 terrorists in retaliation. However, the ground reality is that the army has had to retreat from many areas. “This is an attack on the sovereignty of Pakistan. We will not spare those spreading anarchy in Balochistan at any cost.” Shehbaz Sharif, Prime Minister of Pakistan Root of rebellion: Decades old resentment This boil in Balochistan has not come suddenly. Baloch citizens have long been protesting against the plunder of resources, ‘enforced disappearances’ by the army and human rights violations. Now this movement has taken the shape of a full-fledged civil war.
