"Heartbreakingly real" drama is ready to stream and fans have labelled it "superior in every way" to Silent Witness.

With the New Year now in full swing, Silent Witness fans can once again breathe a sigh of relief as the hit forensic drama is back once again.

Season 29, which kicks off this evening, Monday, February 2, on BBC One, will consist of five two-part stories revolving around the iconic trio Nikki (played by Emilia Fox), Jack (David Caves) and Harriet (Maggie Steed).

But as fans gear up to take another deep dive into the world of Silent Witness, there is an alternative that has been hailed as "one of the best British crime dramas ever".

An IMDb user went as far as to write: "It's certainly far better than the BBC's stagnant, played-out Silent Witness and for me, approached the levels of say, Broadchurch, Line of Duty and going way back, Inspector Morse in terms of quality."

The award-winning six season cold case drama follows a duo of veteran London detectives who "uncover the truth behind tangled, complicated murders from the past".

Originally starring The Split actress Nicola Walker as DCI Cassie Stuart and Sanjeev Bhaskar as DI Sunny Khan, Unforgotten is readily available to watch for free on ITV's streaming service ITVX.

In a shocking turn that no one expected, Walker was replaced in season five by Sinead Keenan as DCI Jessie James, after Cassie's series four death.

Despite the major change in casting, Unforgotten returned for a sixth season last year with its seventh outing currently in production.

Labelling it as a "masterpiece", a fan exclaimed: "This series blew me away!!

"Don't miss this one! Tense, exciting, interesting.. and a really intelligent series."

"It's an extraordinarily well-written and well-plotted deep dive into psychology, pathology, marriage, love, anger, resentment, and basically everything else", a second echoed.

Describing it as the "best crime drama ever", another wrote: "I hope there are many more seasons of Unforgotten, it is an absolutely amazing show."
