Man Utd announce transfer seconds before January window slammed shut
Daily mirror | February 3, 2026 9:39 AM CST

Manchester United left it late but announced a loan move for youngster James Scanlon to Swindon Town on loan. The confirmation arrived at 18.59 on the club's website, seconds before the 7pm transfer deadline.

The Red Devils went without a signing during January but saw a number of deals come to fruition on deadline day. Ethan Wheatley joined Bradford, having returned from Northampton earlier in the month.

Gabriele Biancheri joined Rotherham until the end of the season, and Jacob Devaney is set to move to St Mirren in Scotland, where the deadline is later.

Tyrell Malacia was not allowed to make an exit from the club and will now see out his contract at Old Trafford. The Dutchman was ready to fly to Istanbul to facilitate a transfer.

There was no such trouble for Scanlon, however, who is set to make his first foray into first-team football on his first loan away from the club.

The club said in their statement: "Manchester United forward James Scanlon has secured a first loan move of his career. The 19-year-old is joining League Two side Swindon Town for the remainder of the 2025/26 campaign.

"Ian Holloway's side are challenging for promotion to League One and have a midweek game away to Harrogate Town next on their agenda.

"Scanlon was outstanding in a recent Premier League International Cup game against Sporting, scoring a superb hat-trick against the Lisbon side. He also found the net earlier in the competition, against Athletic Club, and in a National League Cup tie at Rochdale in October.

"After doing well for our Under-21s, the next step will be to experience senior league football with the Robins.

"However, the teenager has already accrued valuable experience at international level. The Academy graduate has amassed 20 caps for Gibraltar, scoring twice, and this should stand him in good stead for what lies ahead.

"Best of luck to James for the rest of the season!"
