According to ESPNTerry auctioned off more than 50 items from his illustrious playing career in late January 2026, raising a total of over US$695,000. A significant portion of the proceeds will be donated to the John Terry Foundation, an organization dedicated to supporting disadvantaged youth in the U.K.

The headline item of the auction was the jersey Messi wore during the Champions League group stage match between Chelsea and Barcelona in October 2006. This rare orange Barcelona kit fetched $183,000, exceeding the $115,900 paid for Ronaldo’s Manchester United jersey in 2008.

Sharing on Instagram, Terry revealed the special value of the Messi shirt, noting that it was a rare away kit and that he had approached the then-teenaged superstar in the final minutes of the game to ask for a swap.

“This is a very special shirt, it is from the great and one and only Lionel Messi, when he played at Stamford Bridge,” he wrote. “It’s the orange kit that they didn’t wear too often, so again very special.”

In addition to the two superstars’ jerseys, U.S.-based Goldin Auctions featured numerous other high-value collectibles of Terry. A Thierry Henry jersey, worn during Arsenal’s 2-1 victory over Chelsea in their historic invincible season of 2003-04, sold for $93,820. The shirt included a personal inscription from the French striker: “To John, keep up the good work.”

Other notable items included match-worn jerseys from legends such as Frank Lampard, Steven Gerrard, Paolo Maldini, Cesc Fabregas, Ashley Cole, Gianfranco Zola, Samuel Eto’o and Rio Ferdinand. Terry also sold several replica trophies, with a 2007 FA Cup replica fetching the highest price among them at $26,840, alongside personal equipment including captain’s armbands, boots, and shin pads.

Terry, 45, is considered one of the greatest English and Premier League defenders ever. With Chelsea, he won five Premier League titles, a Champions League and an Europa League.
