If you're an award-winning author or a screenwriter who has worked with major film studios, you have a golden opportunity to work for Elon Musk's company, xAI. Musk is hiring experienced writers to make his artificial intelligence (AI) 'Grok' even smarter. According to a recent job listing, they are looking for experts in various fields such as medicine, law, and journalism to better train the AI. Notably, they are offering an impressive salary of $40 to $125 per hour (approximately ₹3,300 to ₹10,400) for this work.
Grok's Controversial Past
xAI aims to teach Grok to write in different styles with the help of top writers, making it even more intelligent. However, this is the same chatbot that has been mired in controversy over the past year.
Grok has faced several serious allegations, including promoting racist content and even praising Hitler and supporting genocide. Furthermore, cases of Grok being used to create deepfakes (fake explicit images and videos) have also surfaced, leading to its complete ban in countries like Indonesia and the Philippines.
What are the job requirements?
Interestingly, xAI has set very high standards for this position. For example, a fiction writer must either have a deal with a major publishing house or have sold more than 50,000 copies of their novel. Additionally, writers who have had more than 10 short stories published in prestigious publications like 'The New Yorker' or have been finalists for major awards such as the Hugo and Nebula Awards will also be considered eligible for this position. The same is true for screenwriters, who are required to have credits on at least two feature films with major studios like Netflix, Disney, or Warner Bros. Failing that, they must have at least a nomination for a prestigious award such as an Oscar or an Emmy.
AI will replace those who train it.
While it seems logical on one level that xAI is seeking experts with top-tier experience, a deeper look reveals this move to be somewhat insulting to writers. Essentially, some of the world's most talented writers are being asked to train the very technology that is being developed to potentially replace them in the future. On top of that, they are being offered a relatively low starting salary of $40 per hour, considering their skill and stature. Elon Musk's new hiring process is bound to reignite this long-standing debate.
