Crime – Residents of a quiet village in Uttar Pradesh’s Deoria district were left stunned after police uncovered a theft case that unfolded in an unexpected way. The incident, which came to light only after weeks, involved a school-going boy who unknowingly handed over family jewellery in exchange for free food from local acquaintances.

An Ordinary Village, An Unusual Discovery
The incident took place in Bhagwanpur Tiwari village, located along the Deoria–Kasya road near Dumri Chauraha. The area is known for its modest shops and daily bustle, including a small roadside stall selling momos that draws steady foot traffic from nearby residents.
Among its regular visitors was Prathamesh Kumar Mishra, a Class 7 student who often stopped by the stall after school. According to investigators, his frequent visits gradually drew the attention of three local men from the area.
Trust Built Through Familiarity
Police officials stated that the three men, identified as Deepak, Rakesh, and Pintu, began offering the boy free momos on a regular basis. Over time, the gesture turned into a routine, with no immediate reason for suspicion. The boy reportedly believed the men were simply being kind.
As weeks passed, the men allegedly began giving the child small amounts of cash along with food. Investigators say this was followed by casual conversations that eventually led to requests for valuables from his home.
Jewellery Removed in Small Steps
Unaware of the seriousness of his actions, Prathamesh is believed to have accessed a cupboard at his home and removed jewellery items gradually. Police said the items were handed over in phases, avoiding any sudden disappearance that could raise suspicion within the household.
The valuables reportedly included gold necklaces, rings, bangles, earrings, nose pins, a mangtika, and silver toe rings. Family members remained unaware, as no immediate need arose to check the contents of the cupboard.
The Moment the Loss Was Discovered
The situation came to light when a relative of the boy’s father, Vimlesh Kumar Mishra, visited the home and asked for her jewellery that had been kept there for safekeeping. When the cupboard was opened, family members realised that all the valuables were missing.
Alarmed by the discovery, the family questioned the child. According to police sources, the boy broke down and admitted that he had given the jewellery away over time in return for food and small sums of money.
Police Investigation and Arrests
Following the confession, the family approached local police, who began an investigation. Officers detained the three accused men for questioning and later recovered a portion of the stolen jewellery.
Police officials estimated the total value of the missing items at approximately Rs 85 lakh. The accused have been booked under relevant sections of the law, and further investigation is underway to recover the remaining valuables.
A Cautionary Case for Families
Authorities described the case as highly unusual, highlighting how minors can be manipulated through trust and incentives. Police have urged parents to remain alert and to speak openly with children about personal safety and the value of household belongings.
The incident has sparked discussions in the village about awareness and responsibility, especially when children interact regularly with adults outside their families. Officials said the case will be handled with sensitivity given the child’s age.
