PM Modi is playing on the front foot regarding trade agreements, made 5 trade deals in 6 months, changed the world order

US-India Trade Deal: The Government of India is currently playing an active role in trade agreements. Recently, India has completed the final phase of negotiations with America on the long pending trade deal. US President Donald Trump himself gave this information after a phone conversation with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday.

Trump also announced that the 50 percent tariff imposed by America on India has been reduced to 18 percent. Trump expressed happiness over the deal and described himself and PM Modi as great leaders. Including the deal with America, this is the fifth trade agreement India has signed in the last 6 months.

July 2025: India signed a Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) with the United Kingdom. The agreement ensures zero tariffs on 99 per cent of Indian exports to the UK, including textiles, leather, engineering products and marine products. Along with this, India also got permission to gradually reduce the tariff on British goods.

December 2025: India-Oman Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) signed. Under this, tariffs were removed on more than 98 percent of Indian exports to Oman. This includes gems and jewellery, textiles, pharmaceuticals and engineering products. The agreement also enhances cooperation in services, investment and efficient mobility.

December 2025: India-New Zealand Free Trade Agreement finalised. The agreement allows both countries to reduce tariffs on approximately 95 percent of traded goods and promotes long-term investment in Indian exports, manufacturing, services and innovation sectors.

27 January 2026: After almost two decades of negotiations, the India-EU trade agreement was finalised. The landmark agreement is expected to eliminate or sharply reduce tariffs on nearly 90 percent of goods traded between the two sides, benefiting the textile, engineering products, marine products and automobile sectors.

2 February 2026: The last trade agreement was with the US, in which US President Donald Trump reduced the total tariff imposed on India from 50 percent to 18 percent.
