New Baggage Rules 2026: The government has changed the baggage rules for passengers coming to India. Under these new rules, passengers can now bring goods of higher value than before without paying custom duty. These rules have come into effect from 2 February 2026 and will replace the old Baggage Rules, 2016.

According to the new rules, citizens resident in India, tourists of Indian origin and foreign nationals holding valid visas (except tourist visa) can now bring goods up to Rs 75,000 without paying duty. Earlier this limit was Rs 50,000. This facility will be applicable for most of the passengers coming by air or sea route.

Separate border for foreign tourists

Separate rules have been set for foreign tourists. Foreign tourists who come to India by air or sea route can bring with them goods worth up to Rs 25,000 without duty. The condition is that these items should be with them or in their bag.

Jewelry rules for those living abroad for more than a year

Indian citizens or people of Indian origin who have been living abroad for more than a year will be allowed to bring a certain amount of jewelery duty free when returning to India.

Female passengers: Jewelery up to 40 grams
Male passengers: Jewelery up to 20 grams

This jewelery should be for personal use. Goods brought with the intention of selling them will not be included in this exemption.

Permission to bring a new laptop

It has also been made clear in the new rules that a passenger of 18 years of age or above (except crew member) can bring a new laptop with him without duty. This also includes notepad computers.

Duty-free border will not be shared

The government has also made it clear that the duty-free limit of one passenger cannot be combined with that of another passenger. This means that even when traveling in a family or group, the limit for each person will be considered different.

The rules for bringing or taking out cash in India will remain the same as before. These rules will be decided as per the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA) and its instructions.
