The first thing many people will realise about Brits and the life in the UK when they first move is the clear distinction between upper class and working class, and what is considered being 'posh', as it might not be what they'd expect.
For many people not in the UK, they think of the Royal Family when thinking about poshness, including living in big castles or estates, wearing designer clothes, and having afternoon tea every day - but how much of this is actually true? This is what one Americanwanted to find out, as they took to Reddit's'Ask UK' forum to ask Brits about what makes someone 'posh', as they'd realised it wasn't anything like they'd expect it to be.
"What are things in the UK that are considered posh that don’t translate the same in the US?" they asked in the post.
- Scared foster dog won't leave crate for 10 days, then something amazing happens
- Hidden Spanish islands nobody has heard of with 'world's best beach'
They went on to explain that as an American, they were often left confused by what’s considered "posh" in the UK and was asking Brits to clarify what different things made someone posh.
"I saw a comment here saying they’re from the country so obviously there is posh people everywhere which surprised me," they explained. "In the US, rich people usually live in major cities. rural areas here are generally not associated with wealth at all."
They went on to ask for more examples of things that are considered posh or associated with wealth in the UK that wouldn't translate to the same thing in the US And people didn't disappoint, as the comment section soon filled with hundreds of people discussing what it meant to be 'posh' in the UK.
One person said: "Hunting. Often (not exclusively, of course) done by rich people with large country estates, rather than a redneck with a rifle they bought at WalMart."
To this, someone else added: "It depends a lot on what you class as hunting. Deer stalking is quite posh. Things like coursing and ferriting being very working class. Shooting game birds is generally seen as very posh but really its a very mixed bag."
On another note, someone else said: "In the UK, someone with a rundown old house full of ancient, dusty furniture and who dresses in their mums coat and muddy boats is posher than any McMansion beauty queen."
To this, someone else added: "My mind instantly went to the late Elizabeth II, driving around in a rundown old Range Rover with a headscarf on and a pair of muddy wellies. That's 100% British upper class."
"A lot of the time posh people have posh faces. That sounds ridiculous but British people will know exactly what I mean," another person said.
Other things that came up included wearing corduroy trousers, paying for private medical treatment, going to private school, living in an old house with matching old furniture, having an old 'crappy' car, and owning only a small TV. Some also argued that having a 'southern' accent despite living in the northern part of the UK also was a good sign of someone being posh.
Several people also argued that there's a big different between being rich and being posh, as they two things aren't synonymous with each other, as being 'posh' could be inherited, despite the person in question not having much money, while rich people could also not be considered posh.
Someone else added: "I'm not British by birth, but by naturalisation. Happy to be schooled here. My understanding of "posh" from an outsider's view is that ordinary people can't become posh. Not even money can make people posh. Elon Musk, for example. It's generational, passed down from parent to offspring."
They added: "Hardly any American would qualify for the British "posh". Perhaps very few, with the right heritage. And not just any heritage. Maybe emigrated European royalty."
