In a shocking incident, a groom allegedly murdered his close friend just hours before his wedding in Maharashtra’s Beed district, fearing that the victim would disrupt the ceremony over an unpaid loan of Rs 1.5 lakh, police said on Tuesday.

The victim, identified as Chand alias Guddu Tamboli (30), was found bludgeoned to death on Monday morning on the outskirts of Khokarmoh village in Shirur Kasar tehsil.

According to the police, Chand had lent Rs 1.5 lakh to his friend Atiq Tamboli and had been persistently demanding repayment. Investigations revealed that Chand had threatened to turn up at Atiq’s wedding venue on Monday and create a scene if the money was not returned.

Fearing public embarrassment on his wedding day, Atiq allegedly decided to eliminate his friend. On Sunday night, he reportedly lured Chand to a secluded location and killed him by crushing his head with a stone before fleeing the spot, a local crime branch official said.

Following the recovery of the body, police launched a probe and, using technical surveillance and local intelligence inputs, tracked down Atiq in Beed city late Monday night. He has been arrested and booked on charges of murder.
