London, 3 February 2026: New laws have been announced for the year 2026 by Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC), the highest rule making body in the cricket world. In these new reforms, a major change has been made in an age-old rule of Test cricket, which will make the game more exciting and exciting. Especially the changes made in the rule of stopping the game in the last over of the day will prove beneficial for the fielding team.
According to the rule till now, if the last over of the day was going on in a Test match and any wicket was taken during that time, then the game of that day was ended there itself. The batting team used to field new batsmen on the next day as per their strategy. However, according to the new MCC law 12.5.2, this rule has now changed. Now if a wicket is taken in the last over, the game will not stop there. It will be mandatory to bowl the remaining balls of the over and the new batsmen will have to come to the field and face the game on the same day. This change will benefit the fielding team which is putting pressure and will increase the mental pressure on the batsmen. MCC has also made technical changes in the specifications of the ball used in women’s cricket and under-13 (junior) cricket. These changes in the weight and size of the ball have been made to improve the quality of play.
Cricket experts believe that in Test cricket, continuing the game after losing a wicket in the last over will increase the excitement among the fans. Often the fielding team would have control over the match, but due to the old rule the batting team would get ‘safe passage’. Now with the new rule the bowlers will get a chance to remain aggressive till the last moment. These new rules will be implemented in all international and domestic matches from 2026.
